Watercolor vs Acrylic

I have started painting almost exclusively in watercolor until recently when I decided to give acrylics a try. I did try painting in gouache but haven’t quite mastered this very opaque medium.

So, I purchased some quality acrylic paints like Liquitex and Golden Open. I learned that, unlike watercolor, acrylics are thicker and applied directly from the palettes with little or no water. They also dry fast, which can challenge a newcomer like me. However, I’ve started enjoying it—learning to layer and blend the colors. Below are my initial works.

Morning on Fire – Acrylic

Morning Fire was my first attempt to conduct a color study for a friend whose daughter needed a large painting to tie in her decor in her new home. She gave me some color suggestions and sample photos. With no experience painting in acrylic on canvas – I took to the task, not expecting any miracles. While this was a much smaller size than what she wanted – it gave me an opportunity and an excuse to start painting. I thought it turned out better than I expected
